About the shop
One mechanic,
one van, your driveway.
Spoke & Chain is a small mobile repair shop in Asheville. There is no storefront and no front desk — the shop arrives, does the work, and leaves with the bike running better than it did.
Most bike repairs don’t need a shop. They need a stand, the right tools, and someone who has done the job a few hundred times.
That’s the whole idea here. Instead of you loading a bike into a car, driving across town, leaving it for a week and driving back, I bring the stand and the tools to where the bike already is. It usually takes less of your day than the drive would have.
Tune-ups and flat fixes are most of what I do — about eight visits in ten. The rest is brake work, drivetrain cleaning, wheel truing, and the occasional full overhaul for a bike that deserves the long treatment. Those take longer and cost more, and I say so before starting.
I work on whatever people ride: commuters, old mountain bikes, hybrids that have been in a garage for a decade, kids’ bikes that need the brakes to actually stop. If your bike is a brand I’ve never heard of, that’s fine — the parts are mostly the same.
What I don’t do is pretend to be a big operation. It’s me, my tools, and the schedule I keep. That’s the trade: no showroom, but you get a mechanic who shows up when he said he would and tells you the price before he picks up a wrench.
